Fue  un actor de cine australiano-estadounidense.

 

Durante la edad de oro del cine en Hollywood fue conocido por sus personajes de galán, aventurero temerario y héroe romántico.

 

Considerado el sucesor natural de Douglas Fairbanks, tuvo una fama mundial por los papeles interpretados en Hollywood, frecuente pareja con Olivia de Havilland.

 

Se hizo conocido como Robin Hood en The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), una interpretación por la que fue nominado por The American Film Institute como el 18.º héroe en la historia del cine estadounidense.

 

Sus otros papeles famosos incluyeron al líder epónimo en El capitán Blood (1935), el mayor Geoffrey Vickers en La carga de la Brigada Ligera (1936) o numerosos wésterns como Dodge City (1939), Camino de Santa Fe (1940) y San Antonio (1945).
